چکیده

Global-scale changes in water vapor and responses to surface temperature variability since 1979 are evaluated across a range of satellite ground-based observations, reanalysis (ERA5) coupled atmosphere-only CMIP6 climate model simulations. Global-mean column integrated increased by 1%/decade during 1988-2014 observations However, simulations overestimate trends this is partly explained past studies showing that internal suppressed observed warming period. Decreases low-altitude tropical ERA5 before around 1993 considered suspect based on inconsistency with microwave data 1979. AIRS does not capture the tropospheric 2002 shown other satellite, products. global interannual consistent datasets increases ∼4-5% near 10-15% at 300 hPa for each 1°C increase temperature. Global thermodynamic amplification upper Clausius Clapeyron dependence saturation pressure dominated ocean responses. Upper moistening larger greater warming.

Contributions of stratospheric water vapor to decadal changes in the rate of global warming.

Stratospheric water vapor concentrations decreased by about 10% after the year 2000. Here we show that this acted to slow the rate of increase in global surface temperature over 2000-2009 by about 25% compared to that which would have occurred due only to carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. More limited data suggest that stratospheric water vapor probably increased between 1980 and 2000,...

Water Vapor and the Dynamics of Climate Changes

Water vapor is not only Earth’s dominant greenhouse gas. Through the release of latent heat when it condenses, it also plays an active role in dynamic processes that shape the global circulation of the atmosphere and thus climate. Here we present an overview of how latent heat release affects atmosphere dynamics in a broad range of climates, ranging from extremely cold to extremely warm. Contra...

Stratospheric water vapor feedback.

We show here that stratospheric water vapor variations play an important role in the evolution of our climate. This comes from analysis of observations showing that stratospheric water vapor increases with tropospheric temperature, implying the existence of a stratospheric water vapor feedback. We estimate the strength of this feedback in a chemistry-climate model to be +0.3 W/(m(2)⋅K), which w...

Enceladus' water vapor plume.

The Cassini spacecraft flew close to Saturn's small moon Enceladus three times in 2005. Cassini's UltraViolet Imaging Spectrograph observed stellar occultations on two flybys and confirmed the existence, composition, and regionally confined nature of a water vapor plume in the south polar region of Enceladus. This plume provides an adequate amount of water to resupply losses from Saturn's E rin...

Warming in the Tibetan Plateau: Possible influences of the changes in surface water vapor

[1] The Tibetan Plateau has warmed most rapidly during the winter months in the latter half of the 20th century. Changes in surface specific humidity and their effect on changes in downward longwave radiation (DLR) at the surface are examined to evaluate the pattern of seasonal warming at different elevations over the plateau between 1961 and 2000. We use observed seasonal changes in specific h...
